I sometimes find it difficult to make sweeping declarations such as, “I have a sweet tooth” because, to be honest, when given the choice between a chocolate tart and a slice of freshly baked bread, I can’t quite decide who the winner is. Sometimes I crave the devilish sweetness of one thing and then the soothing savoury flavour of another.

The Icon Chef Pastry Pro, designed in Switzerland by Betty Bossi, provides the opportunity for both a sweet tooth and savoury fan to be satisfied. The funky little device requires very little effort for a big wow effect! It includes 3 different fun shapes: parcel, boat and pinwheel. Depending on which side of the sweetness spectrum you sit on, the different cut-outs can make all different types of treats and snacks that are too good not to munch on all at once.

Personally, I am craving a delicious, crispy, savoury pastry snack, so I decided to show you a recipe that can be used with the Pastry Pro to satisfy such a craving.

Ham Windmills

Preparation: Approx. 15 mins

Baking: 18 mins | Makes: approx. 15 windmills

INGREDIENTS

120 g diced ham

80 g low fat quark (cottage cheese can be used as an alternative)

2 tbsp chives, finely chopped

¼ tsp salt

Pepper to taste

1 portion puff pastry, rolled out (approx. 25 x 42 cm)

Flour for dusting

1 egg, beaten

2 tbsp sesame seeds

METHOD

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (convection).
  2. Mix the ham and all other ingredients together, including pepper.
  3. Cut out pastry and fill (instructions included with Pastry Pro). Lay the windmills on a tray lined with baking paper, brush with egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  4. Bake for approx. 18 mins in the oven.
  5. Remove from oven and place windmills on rack to cool.
